Printing Texts with Watermarks

The easiest way to print watermarks is using your printer driver. This is an ideal way to classify a document as draft or confidential. Print your document choosing file|print, click on the properties button and with a bit of luck you'll find a configuration utility for watermarks.

Okay, not every printer is fitted with such a watermark utility, or maybe you want a more complicated watermark than "draft" or "confidential". For sure you can solve this using StarOffice. Draw your watermark using StarDraw and place this drawing as background of a page style.

Use light colors or transparency while you draw your watermark with StarDraw. If you want to use gradients for writings convert them using Modify|Convert|Convert to Curve. If you finished your drawing save it as picture choosing File|Export. The ideal file format is SVM-StarView Metafile, this is the internal graphic format of StarOffice.

Do you already have an watermark (e.g. your company logo) in a bimap format like BMP, JPG, GIF, TIF? Use StarImage to lighten your bitmap or use StarImage effects like charcoal sketch, relief or smooth. They give really nice results.

Now you have to define this picture as background of a page style. This means it will appear on each page formatted with this page style. Edit your page style using the Format|Stylist or double click on the name of the page style in the status bar. The name of the default page style is "Standard". Choose tab background and choose your picture. If you never heard the term "page style" before, go and read about it in your manual. It's a powerful concept to structure and layout a document.

Create a document template if you need this watermark in several documents. Studying about document template is valuable, too.
