The Font Files StarMath and StarBats

or
StarOffice displays an "A" instead of a plus sign...
or
Instead of a bullet there is a small rectangle...

These both questions are in the top ten of all StarOffice questions. These effects are caused by two fonts named StarMath and StarBats who were not properly registered. This failure could happen directly after the installation of StarOffice or after a couple of weeks. This problem occurs just with the Windows versions.

Here are solutions for Windows 95, 98 and NT:

The names of the fonts are StarBats (starbats.ttf) and StarMath (starmath.ttf). Perform a double click on these files in the folder \Windows\Fonts respectively \Winnt\Fonts. Windows starts the program Fontview and the fonts will be registered again. If you are using Windows NT you have to have the necessary read- and write permissions.

A second solution is the button "Repair Font Folder" of the Tool "Tweak UI" in the System Control Folder of Windows. You'll find Tweak UI for Windows 95 and NT in the Internet. The Windows 98 version can be found on the CD-ROM.
Windows 95 and NT: ftp://ftp.cs.tu-berlin.de/pub/msdos/mirrors/ftp.winsite.com/win95/miscutil/tweakui.exe

A last solution is to deinstall and install these fonts. If you loose them during this action or if they are already lost, you can recover them with the repair function for the StarOffice setup utility c:\Office51\setup.exe. Beware the installation CD or folder is needed. If you are a command line user you can use Pkunzip or Unzip to decompress the fonts directly form the installation CD:

pkunzip d:\office51\f_*. Star*.ttf
