If StarOffice comes up with an error message after you restarted it and tells you that it will run only one StarOffice-session. Confirm this message, open your task manager, look for the old StarOffice task and destroy it. If there is no running StarOffice-task, it could be possible StarOffice forgot to delete his lock-file. Search for \Office51\soffice.lck respectively \Office51\config\soffice.lck or \Office52\user\config\soffice.lck.
But maybe there was no breakdown and StarOffice simply will not start anymore, even reboots of your systems don't help. In this case try to backup and delete the following files:
|
File |
Supposed Usage |
|---|---|
\Office51\config\soffice.cfg \Office52\user\config\soffice.cfg |
User Configuration like Keybord-Shortcuts, Menus, Icon Bars. |
\Office51\config\rootstg.scs \Office52\user\config\rootstg.scs |
Container File that stores some stuff about e-mail and news (no user configuration) |
\Office51\store\file.scs \Office52\user\store\file.scs |
Container File that stores some stuff about File|Open-Dialog (no user configuration) |
\Office51\explorer\workplace.scc \Office52\user\explorer\workplace.scc |
Container File that stores some stuff about the workplace entry in StarOffice-Explorer (no user configuration) |
If you get an error message like "Wrong file format" probably the files \office51\config\rootstg.scs and \office51\store\file.scs are damaged.
In case the error message mentions a module named sfx517mi.dll, close your StarOffice session, backup the file \Office51\soffice.ini respectively \Office52\user\soffice.ini and open this fil in an plain text editor. In section soffice-view delete the line starting with 5908Window. Now everything should be fine again.
When none of the hints here worked, search in the StarOffice-directories starting \Office52 for files changed in the last few days. Backup them and delete them one after the other. But be careful! It is important to have a backup to restore the files. For example the registration information of StarOffice 5.0 and 5.1 (o a) are stored in such files. If you loose them you loose your registration.
There where rumours, some new graphic adapters can prevent StarOffice from starting. Try to switch of buffering of bitmaps in changing the properties of there drivers.
If every effort was no success, try a new installation of StarOffice. Your first should de-install any version which might be already installed in any case. Never install a new version over an old one since StarOffice might use some old configuration which might make the new installation pointless. After the de-installation there will be the directory \Office52 containing all files changed since the last installation. Rename that directory e. g. into \Office52_old and install StarOffice into the new directory \Office52. Your old data can be copied from the old directory \Office52_old.
Deleting the file \office51\config\soffice.cfg or \office52\user\config\soffice.cfg helps if your StarOffice is not stable anymore or lost some of it's features. By deleting the .CFG-file you loose your configuration of keyboard-shortcuts, menu-entries, function-bars and so on. My experiences with this problem told me to stay calm. It will not help to use a older backup the .CFG-file to replace the faulty one. In most cases error in this .CFG-file accumulate until the day you notice a misbehaviour of StarOffice.
